Visitor Arrivals in Mekong Countries Reach Nearly 60 Million in 2017

International visitor arrivals in the Greater Mekong Subregion went up by 13% to 59.9 million in 2017, according to the Pacific Asia Travel Association’s Annual Tourism Monitor 2018.

A report from TTR Weekly said the data covers only five countries in the subregion—Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The report said Thailand cornered nearly 60% of those traveling to the Greater Mekong Subregion in 2017. Viet Nam was the second top destination with more than 20%.

The subregion accounted for 48.4% of international visitor arrivals in Southeast Asia in 2017, increasing from its 46.7% share in 2016. The report said tourism in Mekong countries is growing faster than the Asia-Pacific region where the average growth rate is less than 6%.
