Cambodia’s tourism sector earned $3.63 billion in 2024, up 17.8 percent from $3.08 billion a year earlier, according to a report from the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) released on January 31.
In a milestone moment for GMS-wide environmental collaboration, the representatives of the GMS ministries of environment pledged to work together to address the mounting issue of plastic waste pollution in the subregion. The endorsed Phnom Penh Joint Statement on Prevention of Plastic Pollution in the Greater Mekong Subregion represents the commitment of the six countries to address the ecological, economic, and societal challenges posed by plastic waste in the GMS.

The Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) in Cambodia marked a significant upsurge in trade activities in January and February 2024. The trade volume through this economic corridor reached $628 million, reflecting a robust growth of 38.3% compared to the same period in 2023.
The Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (FARDeC), under Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, is significantly bolstering the country's aquaculture sector by producing tens of thousands of fish hatchlings. Young fish bred by FARDeC have exhibited higher survival rates and faster growth compared to those in the wild, a success attributed to the center's specialized feeding program.
Cambodia's tourism sector continues on an upward trajectory, with the country making concerted efforts to surpass pre-pandemic tourism levels through strategic campaigns, international collaborations, and infrastructural enhancements. In the initial months of 2024, Cambodia has seen a significant uptick in international tourism.

The Greater Mekong Subregion Flood and Drought Risk Management and Mitigation Project was approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in December 2012 to support the Government of Cambodia in undertaking measures to prepare for and manage disaster risks linked to floods and droughts. Completed in February 2022, the project supported the rehabilitation of the Damnak Chheukrom Mega Irrigation System.
The GMs Energy Transition Task Force (ETTF) met in Siem Reap on 4-5 December 2023 to discuss updates and plans related to its work streams, including trends, opportunities and related initiatives in the region.
The meeting agreed on these next steps for 2024.
