World Bank Supports Upgrade of Cambodia’s National Road 4
The World Bank approved in June $110 million in additional financing to improve the condition, safety, and climate resilience of a key highway in Cambodia.
National Road 4 is the most direct corridor linking Phnom Penh to Cambodia’s only deep-sea port in Preah Sihanouk province. It endures heavy traffic through several economic zones and rich agricultural areas, including some large-scale farms.
The Road Asset Management Project II will improve connectivity along national road corridors in Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, Tbong Khmom, and Kratie provinces. It also enables an immediate response in case of an eligible crisis or emergency.
The additional support will be used to upgrade more than 200 kilometers with an overlay of asphalt concrete, replace shoulders, and build drains and bridges along flood-prone areas. It will introduce innovative road designs that include climate proofing.
The project will also upgrade existing weighing stations and reduce the risk of overloading. It will install speed-limit zoning, safety corridors, and feeder road improvements that include guide-signs, solar powered lights, and speed cameras.
