Cambodia: Status and Potential for the Development of Biofuels and Rural Renewable Energy

Cambodia’s economic performance has been strong in 2000–2008 and its energy demand is likely to increase. In line with this, the search for alternative energy, including biofuels, is being pursued aggressively.

In Cambodia, land is available to produce energy crops; however, resource allocation for biofuels will affect the price of food and other agricultural products. The country needs to develop an integrated policy to simultaneously address food security, poverty reduction, and energy security.

The Greater Mekong Subregion Working Group on Agriculture conducted a study that provides a preliminary assessment of the long-run commercial viability of a biofuel program in Cambodia.
