Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan will invest in an onshore wind farm in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) that will supply electricity to Viet Nam. The facility is set to have power generation capacity of 600 megawatts (MW) and is eyed to become the largest onshore wind farm in Southeast Asia. The project will be Lao PDR’s first endeavor in exporting wind power.

The Diamond Generating Asia Ltd., a Mitsubishi subsidiary, will form a joint venture with Impact Energy Asia, a Thai renewable energy company. Construction is being prepared to commence at the end of this year with operations set to start in 2024.

Viet Nam's energy demand is rapidly growing, and is projected to grow at 8% annually through 2030. A grid network will be constructed to transport energy from Lao PDR to Viet Nam through Viet Nam Electricity.

To further help meet Viet Nam’s energy demand for wind-power generated renewable energy,  ADB signed a $116 million green loan with Lien Lap Wind Power Joint Stock Company, Phong Huy Wind Power Joint Stock Company, and Phong Nguyen Wind Power Joint Stock Company, on 27 May 2021 to help build and operate three 48-MW wind farms, totaling 144 MW, in Quang Tri Province, Viet Nam.
