ADB Invests in Enhanced Healthcare for Lao PDR's Border Regions
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Border Areas Health Project in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), worth $24.9 million. It includes a $4.95 million grant from the Asian Development Fund, aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility in the border provinces of Champasak, Phongsali, and Savannakhet. The project will support the Ministry of Health in Lao PDR to more effectively meet the healthcare needs of migrant workers and local populations living in these border regions. The project is a response to the challenges posed by increased migration and economic growth in the Greater Mekong Subregion, which have put additional pressure on healthcare services in border areas, highlighting the need for improved healthcare access for migrants and residents alike.
The project will
1. Strengthen health services in the identified border areas, such as by upgrading healthcare facilities and equipment and enhancing the skills of healthcare professionals in the targeted provinces, to provide better healthcare services for both migrant workers and local residents.
2. Enhance the gender-responsive health services for migrants and other vulnerable persons in border areas, such as introducing a comprehensive program tailored to the health needs of migrant workers, including both men and women, who reside in or pass through these provinces.
3. Implement digital systems for integrated delivery of health services. An important component of the initiative is the implementation of an electronic medical record system, which aims to improve the continuity of care for patients by linking healthcare services in border areas with those in other parts of the country.
This effort by the ADB underscores its commitment to fostering a healthier, more inclusive, and resilient society in Lao PDR, contributing to the country's overall economic growth and stability.
