Project Description

RAI2-E is a consolidated regional malaria grant for 2018-2020 which constitutes the second phase of the current regional artemisinin-resistance initiative with the adoption of the regional malaria elimination goal at the core of the project. It supports increased malaria service coverage for remote populations in border areas and other at-risk populations, as well as case management through health volunteers and strengthening of national surveillance systems. It involves exchange information on epidemic outbreak, follow-up treatment SOP, vector control, and partnership at national and international levels.

Progress (as of March 2021)

Ongoing. Current grant is bringing the region closer to malaria elimination as a result of increased coordination and dialogue between countries, RAI alignment with National Strategies, increasing role and coverage of community malaria volunteers, and ac- ceptance of CSOs by MOHs as part of the health system. In addition, the expanding use of electronic HIS in surveillance and real time reporting is proving to be effective, together with the Regional level data-sharing platform. Increased testing activities in countries have led to a larger number of people reached, resulting in higher ABER and declining malaria positivity rates (MPR) and annual parasite incidence rates (API). Data indicate that the Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam showed a steady declining trend in malaria cases over the last years. However, there have been challenges for Cambodia due to the disruption of the VMWs scheme. This scheme, though, has become fully functional resulting in lower number of cases reported in 2018 than in 2017. The RAI Regional Steering Committee (RSC) held its 14th bi-annual meeting on November 1, 2019 in Yangon, Myanmar. Participants, which included, H.E. Dr. Myint Htwe, Minister of Health and Sports, Myanmar; Dr. Donald Kaberuka, Chair of the Global Fund Board; members of governments; National Malaria Programme Directors; international organizations; bilateral and multilateral partners; and civil society assessed the progresses of the RAI2- Elimination grant (2018-2020, $245 million). In efforts to combat the threat of multidrug resistant malaria, RSC members discussed achievements and challenges, as well as future initiatives based on recent epidemiological trends.
