Project Description
In 1992, the GMS countries made a commitment, through Agenda 21, to pursue an integrated policy to achieve sustainable development objectives, i.e., mutually reinforcing economic development, social equity, and environmental conservation. One of the commitments was to develop national sustainable development strategies (NSDS). Five years later, the Rio+5 Summit reiterated the need to formulate NSDSs and begin its implementation by 2005. While the GMS countries have promulgated many strategies and policies on economic growth, social welfare, and environmental conservation, an integrated methodology has generally not been used. The GMS countries recognized needs to (i) develop their NSDSs; (ii) set up multistakeholders structure that consists of government, business and civil society to have more practical NSDSs and (iii) have subregional scope in the NSDSs formulation. The TA supported the UNEP-s global NSDS initiative to assist GMS countries to fulfill their commitments.
